What is sickle cell anaemia, you may ask?

Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic disorder that affects the structure and function of red blood cells and their ability to transport oxygen throughout the body. The condition is caused by a mutation in the gene responsible for producing haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells.

The disease is particularly common in Africa, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. In this article, we'll explore the causes, symptoms, effects, and methods of managing sickle cell anaemia.



Symptoms and Effects

Sickle cell anaemia can cause a wide range of symptoms and complications. One of the most common symptoms is jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes. This occurs because sickle-shaped red blood cells break down much faster than healthy red blood cells. While normal red blood cells survive for around 120 days, sickle cells typically last only 10–20 days. As these cells break down, they release excess bilirubin, a yellow pigment that can build up faster than the liver can remove it. This process also contributes to chronic fatigue, as the body struggles to replace the lost red blood cells.

Another major complication is the abnormal shape of the red blood cells. Instead of being flexible and round, sickle cells become rigid and crescent-shaped. These misshapen cells can block small blood vessels, reducing blood flow to different parts of the body. As a result, individuals may experience severe pain crises, swelling of the hands and feet, and even vision problems caused by restricted blood supply.



Management and Treatment

Although there is currently no cure for sickle cell anaemia, several treatments and lifestyle measures can help manage the condition and improve quality of life.

Regular medical check-ups allow doctors to monitor symptoms and detect complications early. Vaccinations are also essential, as people with sickle cell anaemia are more vulnerable to infections. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet, staying well hydrated, and avoiding factors that trigger pain crises can significantly reduce complications.

For more severe cases, treatment options may include blood transfusions, bone marrow transplants, or gene therapy, which continues to show promising advances in treating the disease.
